PROPER ATTIC INSULATION

Insulating your attic properly is a way of making sure your bill doesn’t go up during winter. It is a project that you can even handle yourself if you do not want to spend money on awarding it to a contractor. When your attic is properly insulated, you will be able to make a lot of savings on energy bills. In summer, the advantage to proper attic insulation is that it helps to keep the indoor temperature stable. After identifying and sealing the air leaks in your home to ensure that the insulation is well carried out, you can then proceed to insulate your attic.

CHOOSE THE MATERIAL AND TYPE OF ATTIC INSULATION YOU WANT

If you will be handling the project on your own, you can choose between loose fill and blanket insulation. The two of them can be layered over material you have before or used on insulated attic. Make a decision on the one you want to use and make sure you check the labels so that you are clear on whatever you are purchasing before doing the attic insulation.

IMPORTANT PREPARATION STEPS TO TAKE BEFORE ATTIC INSULATION

To make sure your insulation lasts for a long time, glass block panels  and keep the air in your house conditioned, you need to carry out some repair work on your house before the attic insulation is done and these include the following:

1.    Repair leaking roofs: If you don’t want water to destroy all the good work you are about to do, you have to repair the leaks on your roof. The water also enables mold to grow, and this can block the heat flow and spoil the air-trapping pockets. Search for leaks by looking out for areas with molds or places that have water stains.

2.    Route your vents and exhaust fans outside:If your exhaust fans are directed to your attic, it is against building code. Direct it to the exterior so that humid air does not get trapped and ruin your project.

3.    Create gaps between fixtures for safety: at least you should give a gap of 3 inches around all of your fixtures for safety. By doing this, you will avert the event of a fire hazard in your house.

PROTECT YOURSELF WHILE DOING THE ATTIC INSULATION FOR YOUR HOUSE

If you are working on the attic, you need to use the right personal protective equipment (PPE) to ensure that the job is carried out without the risk of injury.

•    To get the job done, you need to wear a long sleeve shirt, long pants, dust mask, goggles and work gloves. All of these are needed to protect the eyes, lung and skin from all the fibers that will be flying around when work starts.

•    During the attic insulation project, all of the dark corners in the attic should be well lighted up with the use of clip-on workshop lights or lanterns that are battery operated.

•    Use strong wide boards or pieces of plywood as a standing surface and as you work, move them around. Avoid standing on the joists, because if you lose your balance on it, you will crash through the ceiling.
